Dataset Terminology
The Dataset Terminology section provides an overview of the key configuration areas involved in dataset creation.
Each tab within the dataset workflow contains specific terms, settings, and options that control how data is retrieved, structured, transformed, and validated before being used in dashboards and reports.
This page serves as a navigation guide to detailed terminology documentation for each step and tab in the dataset workflow. For the full step-by-step flow, see Create Dataset.
Data Source Selection Terminology
Data Source Selection is the first step in the Create Dataset workflow. It includes terminology related to:
- Choosing the type of data source (database, file, API, or custom)
- Database and connected sources (JDBC, NoSQL, Google BigQuery, SharePoint, etc.)
- File-based sources (Excel, CSV, JSON, Parquet, Flat Files)
- API and custom sources
Your selection here determines which connection and configuration options appear in the next step.
Connection Selection Tab Terminology
The Connection Selection tab is the second step. It includes terminology related to:
- Selecting or creating a database or cloud connection
- Uploading or selecting files (Excel, CSV, JSON)
- Workflows for Parquet, Flat Files, and API Endpoint (which may skip to the General Tab)
The options shown depend on the data source type you selected in Step 1.
General Tab Terminology (Query Configuration)
The General Tab is the foundation of dataset creation. It includes terminology related to:
- Query configuration
- Parameters
- Dataset naming
Understanding these terms ensures accurate data retrieval and proper dataset setup.
Output Columns Tab Terminology
The Output Columns Tab defines how the dataset output is structured. It includes terminology related to:
- Column names and aliases
- Data types
- Format transformations
- Data type overrides
These settings ensure the dataset is clean, standardized, and ready for reporting.
Preview Tab Terminology
The Preview Tab allows you to review and validate dataset results before saving.
This section includes terminology related to:
- Preview results grid
- Record limits (e.g., 500-record default view)
- Show All option
- Column-level filtering
- Save and Cancel actions
The Preview tab ensures that the dataset output is accurate and ready for publishing.
Summary
The Dataset workflow is structured into clearly defined steps and configuration areas:
- Data Source Selection – Choose the type of data source (database, file, API, etc.)
- Connection Selection – Select or configure the connection or upload the file
- General Tab – Define query logic, parameters, and dataset name
- Output Columns Tab – Refine and standardize output structure
- Preview Tab – Validate results before publishing
By understanding the terminology used in each step and tab, you can configure datasets accurately and efficiently.
